At the turn of May and June, CM Localization Center kept a busy conference attendance schedule.
During Language Resources and Evaluation Conference (LREC) 2016, held on May 23–28 in Portorož, Slovenia, Michal Tyszkowski presented the CMT machine translation quality rating which had been developed in-house.

The same rating was also presented during TAUS Roundtable in Riga, Latvia on June 1.

Both events were small meetings of experts, while the subject we presented was very positively received. For us, it was yet another important step in the development of our company as a leader in the translation technology.

Terminology management has always been a key aspect of our work. Thanks to our procedures for terminology extraction, our base now contains over 50,000 English terms and their Polish equivalents. Moreover, these terms have been verified by experts and accepted by our clients.
Our terminology base is divided into more than 20 categories, of which the most numerous are: automotive, biology, chemistry, IT, machinery, medicine, photography, robotics, and telecommunication.

This database is harnessed by KeyStoneTM – a tool for checking the correctness of terminology used in a translation, allowing for automatic recognition of terms with 90% accuracy, regardless of grammar.

In 2016 CM’s employees actively participate in a series of conferences.

On March 3–5, Rafał Kiljan delivered a speech at the conference National Interdisciplinary Scientific Conference organized by AGH in Kraków.
And on March 11–12, our team took part in The Translation and Localization Conference 2016. One day later, Bartłomiej Dymek hosted a panel discussion at the conference called Konferencja Tłumaczy 2016.

In mid-September, the 9th annual conference of the EMRBI Institute, co-organized this year by Centrum Lokalizacji CM and the University of Warsaw, will take place. The conference motto is “Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Digital Ecosystems”.

CM has developed a machine translation quality indicator – CMT. It allows for the assessment of MT quality in advance, without having to compare the machine and human translations. This is a real breakthrough in MT quality assessment, as so far, its assessment was only possible “post factum”, i.e. after the translation was completed and edited by a human. Our solution enables one to decide whether machine translation really shortens the project turnaround time, or whether using MT is unprofitable.

This method allows companies to decide if machine translation could help in translating a specific text or whether using it is unprofitable.

CM Localization Center has been selected as a partner for the Department of German Studies at the University of Wrocław to carry out student internship in the field of technical translation. This collaboration involves preparation of a student internship program that includes instruction on using CAT tools and practical training in translating technical, medical, IT, and marketing materials. 10 students have been enrolled for the internship this academic year.

Our goal is broadening the practical knowledge of German Studies graduates through this internship program in order to enable them to become qualified translators in the future.

On 10th of October, during the conference held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the Society of Sworn and Specialized Translators (TEPIS), Bartłomiej Dymek, a translator and proofreader at Centrum Lokalizacji CM, had a presentation on the use of CAT tools and QA software, titled „CAT Tools in Translation”. The conference participants found the presentation very engaging, and many interesting questions were asked.

Although currently CAT tools are not always appreciated by sworn translators, we hope that this and upcoming presentations will result in increased interest in the benefits from exploring the potential of CAT tools and translation quality assurance software in sworn translations.

MT Marathon is an annual, 6-day meeting of machine translation system programmers and users. It aims to present the latest achievements in this field, to learn new tools and technologies, as well as to team work on projects aimed at expanding the functionality of MT tools.

This year's edition held between 7th and 12th of September was very interesting, and the dominant subject was MT evaluation tools. Active participation of our representatives will definitely translate into further development of the MT technology used by our company.

C&M has been cooperating with the Philological School of Higher Education (WSF) in Wrocław since 2011. The result of this cooperation is, among others, a newly developed practical philological course which is to prepare graduates for the challenges of the modern labor market. This includes training for the profession of a translator.

The interview was given by Bartłomiej Dymek, who is the author of the module on general and specialized translation, and by Michał Tyszkowski, PhD, who participated in the evaluation of the course.

Both interviews are available on the Philological School of Higher Education (WSF) website.
